Dreams of a welfare state

Women in Southern Europe wish they could live under a Nordic-style welfare state so they could improve their lives as women. But the financial crisis has made their dreams less realistic than ever. This is according to John Eriksen, a researcher at the Norwegian Social Research Institute and the co-editor of a new book on women’s lives in Europe.

Successes and challenges of the national programme for the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia : implementation and impact

In her thesis, Alemnesh H. Mirkuzie (University of Bergen) addresses the challenges facing an Ethiopian PMTCT-programme. Missed opportunities to prophylactic medication uptake, intra-partum care and infant follow up are factors that negatively impact the survival of exposend infants.


Pregnant : healthy or sick? : "normal pregnancy complaints" and eligibility to protection

In her thesis, Eva Haukeland Fredriksen has studied social constructions of pregnancy as health or sickness. Her work indicates that workplace and society in general often expect pregnant women with health problems to continue "business as usual", whereas the women themselves argue that rest and care are good coping strategies.


Obesity prevention targeting Norwegian adolescents : prevalence rates, determinants and intervention effects by gender, parental education and parent-child associations

Mona Bjelland's thesis seeks to contribute to the prevention of obesity among school children. Girls and mothers seem more motivated for a healthy lifestyle than boys and fathers. Hence, Bjelland argues that interventions aiming at weight control need to be adapted to the gender of the target group.


Violence against women and ethnicity : commonalities and differences across Europe

Suvi Keskinen (Finland) is one of the authors of this volume presenting current research on violence against migrant and minority women across Europe. The focus is on the interplay of gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion and class and their role in these women's lives.
